Rocky Run Shelter

The turnoff for Rocky Run shelter is located about 1 miles south of Reno Monument. The shelter area is about 0.2 mile west off the trail. There are two shelters here, an older CCC structure and a newer PATC structure. We pass these shelters during the MD AT #5 hike. As it comes so early in the hike, we usually have just a short rest stop here before continuing to have lunch further down the trail. On entering the site, you first come to the newer shelter. It is a modern structure with a skylight, two sleeping levels, and a picnic table on its covered porch. There are two benches with backs which may or may not be on the porch, depending on the whim of recent shelter residents. Another bench and more seating logs are around a fire circle in front of the shelter. A composting privy is located a short distance behind the shelter. A bear box is also nearby. A sign points to tent sites uphill behind the shelter. Downhill, and just across Rocky Run is a piped spring. The older shelter is located near the piped spring on the far side of Rocky Run. It is a very small lean-to structure. There are two old metal chairs, and a cement slab which was probably the base of a fire ring. A small structure in front of the lean-to used to be a two-person swing. The swing itself was lying on the ground beside the shelter when I was there. When I returned in 2020, the swing had been placed in front of the shelter and was serving as a sort of table. Surprisingly, the privy for the old shelter is still there and in good condition.

The older shelter was built in 1940 by CCC. The newer shelter was built in 2008 by PATC volunteers
