Deer Lick Shelter

Deer Lick shelter is located about 2.5 miles south of the Old Forge picnic area and 2.1 miles north of PA Rt 16. We pass this shelter during the PA AT #1 hike. We usually have a short rest stop here before the final push to Rt 16. The shelter is just a few feet off the trail. There are two lean-to structures, a picnic table, two fire rings and a fire grill. The privy is located a short distance behind the shelters. A marked trail leads about a quarter mile uphill behind the shelters to a spring which had adequate water when I was there.

Built 1988/89 by Youth Conservation Corps. These shelters replaced the Mackie Run shelter, a single structure located about a mile south of these shelters (probably near where the AT crosses Mentzer Gap Road) and built by the CCC in 1936
Next shelter NB: Tumbling Run shelter, 3.6 miles (was Antietam shelter, 2.4 miles)
Next shelter SB: Raven Rock shelter, 9.6 miles

I parked at a pipeline clearance on Rattlesnake Run Road. From there, I walked west along the clearance to the AT, then walked south along the trail to the shelter.
