Quarry Gap Shelter

Quarry Gap shelter is located about two miles north of the large parking lot at Caledonia State Park. It is directly on the trail and is widely known among hikers as the finest shelter in the Mid-Atlantic. We pass this shelter during the PA AT #3 hike and take a short break here, having already had lunch at the Milesburn Cabin. We also pass this shelter during the Dark Hollow hike and on that hike, we do have lunch here. Approaching from the south, there is a gate leading into the shelter area. There are two lean-to structures connected by a covered area with a picnic table. There is another covered picnic table, a swing, numerous tent pads, a separate tenting area and many small decorative features. The privy is behind and slightly uphill of the tent pads. The spring is just a few yards away, down a trail in front of the shelter.

The two lean-to structures were built 1935 by the CCC. The present structure, connecting the original two shelters was completed in 1995. Various other features have been added since.
