Appalachian Trail Shelters

In six separate trips, between June 2017 and May 2018, I set out to visit and photograph all the AT shelters which are in range of our Howard County hiking program. At the time, there were 21 shelters along this route. The Devil's Racecourse shelter, a familiar stop for many years, had already been removed by the time of my project, though its spring is still used for the nearby Raven Rock shelter. Since then, the Antietam shelter has also been removed, reducing the current number of shelters to 20. I tried to find the nearest parking access for each shelter, so I did not always begin from the usual county hike starting point. At each shelter, I took photos of the shelter itself, the privy, the water source (spring), and any other local landmarks. I include a hike-in map and elevation profile for each shelter, so you can see these access points. I also include a selection of photos from each shelter. I hope these pages will bring back memories of your last visit, or inspire you to join our next visit or even strike out on your own.

Note: If you enjoy these photos, you may also like the book "The Appalachian Trail: Backcountry Shelters, Lean-To, and Huts" by Sarah Jones Decker, available from ATC and other online outlets. It has photos of every shelter along the entire trail, plus a small collection of former shelters.
